NGO DOCUMENTARY
FOOD IS HOW COMMUNITY BEGINS
The story
For Refugee Community Kitchen, cooking is a way of showing up for people. This documentary follows how they cook, why they do it, and the difference it makes, for the people who are fed and for the people who volunteer their time. It’s a film about care, belonging, and the quiet power of sharing a meal.
How we made it
We filmed in the kitchen and during service day, spending time with the volunteers and service users, so people were relaxed and themselves in front of the camera. We focused on the cooking, the faces, and the natural moments around the kitchen. The edit puts their voices first and lets the impact come through in their own words.

The impact
Since it began, Refugee Community Kitchen has served over 3.5 million hot meals to displaced people and people experiencing homelessness across Northern France and London. Much of the food they cook is surplus or donated, rescued from going to waste and turned into meals by chefs and volunteers.
But the numbers are only part of it. For the people who receive a meal, it’s warmth, dignity, and being seen. For the volunteers who chop, cook, and serve, it’s a way to belong to something bigger. The film follows that impact through the people who live it, in their own words, not as statistics.
